African Centered Science

This series of AfriClasses™ explores ancient African ideas and philosophies that are the basis of the science that we know today. We will first examine the ancient African understanding of matter and energy, then focus in on electricity and how it works and finally we will use all we learned to create a fun, hands-on projects. Note: For some classes materials will be sent via mail. For others, parents must provide the materials see each class for details. This is a live in person class that consists of 10 weekly 1.5 hour sessions. Best for Ages 8 to 14.

In African Centered Science Electricity 4 we will learn how the electricity we use day to day is produced and evaluate the pros and cons of each method.

African Centered Science Electricity 1: Introduction to Electricity

Tuesdays: 11am – 12:30pm EST – Sept 13 – Nov 29, 2022 (11 weeks with 1 week off)

African Centered Science Electricity 1 is the first of a series of holistic, African-centered experiences that begins by exploring the holistic worldview of the ancient people of Kemet (Egypt) and their understanding of the universe. We then dig into understanding the basics of electricity in the way we use it today to power our world. We create fun African centered projects.

In African Centered Science Sound 1 we will learn some amazing ways in which ancient cultures understood sound. We will answer some of the following questions: What is sound? How do we and other creatures make it, sense it and use it? How is it measured? This is a live in person class that consists of 10 weekly 1.5 hour sessions. Best for Ages 8 to 14.

In African Centered Science Electricity 3 we will explore series and parallel circuits and how electricity gets to our homes. This is a live, in-person class that consists of 10 weekly 1.5 hour sessions. Best for Ages 8 to 14.

African History, Heritage & Me 1: The Big Ideas & The African Global Presence Fridays : 2pm – 3:30pm EST – Apr 1 – June 10 (11 weeks with 1 week off)

In this AfriClass the Afronauts will explore The African Global Presence Human Migrations, Places and Names, Decoding Mythologies & Origin Stories of Africa, Time: What is it and Who are the Time-Keepers.

African Centered Science Electricity 2: Circuit Bonanza

African Centered Science Electricity 2 is a Circuit Bonanza! This is a very hands-on class where we will build all kinds of circuits from different materials. We will learn how to make build series and parallel circuits. We will then discover how electricity comes to our homes and finish with a fun hands-on project. An Afronaut Science Kit will be provided via mail. This is a live in person class that consists of 10 weekly 1.5 hour sessions. Best for Ages 8 to 14.

In African Centered Science Sound 2 we will continue our exploration of the ways in which sound is used. We will explore answer some of the following questions: How is it measured? What is ultrasound? Speed of sound? How can it be harnessed? This is a live in person class that consists of 10 weekly 1.5 hour sessions. Best for Ages 8 to 14.
